U.S. Sen. Christopher "Kit" Bond will be the featured speaker at the 28th annual Lincoln Day in Cape Girardeau on March 14.

The annual Republican event will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the A.C. Brase Arena Building. It is sponsored by the Cape Girardeau County Republican Women's Club.

Historically, Cape Girardeau County's Lincoln Day has been the largest Lincoln Day celebration in Missouri, said Brenda Dohogne, president of the Republican Women's Club.

The event draws hundreds of Republicans from throughout Southeast Missouri.

A number of Missouri Republican leaders, county officials and U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson are expected to attend the gathering.

"It should be an informative evening on the state of the union from the courthouse to Jefferson City to Washington, D.C.," said Dohogne.

Bond, a former two-term governor of Missouri, was elected to the Senate in 1986 and re-elected in 1992.

When Republicans took control of the Senate in 1994, Bond assumed a leadership role in the legislative body.

Bond recently has pushed legislation that would give Missouri $200 million more annually in federal highway money.

Lincoln Day tickets are $12 per person and can be obtained by calling (573) 335-0033.
