The August primary election will narrow the field for two major races in Bollinger County. Several candidates filed for sheriff and first and second district commission seats, thus requiring a primary election.
Filing for the county offices closed at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Republican candidates for Bollinger County Sheriff are Jimmie G. Bollinger, Frank Dye, Terry Wiseman and Barry Hughes. Sheriff Dennis Willis filed as a Democrat.
Four Republicans and two Democrats filed for the seat of first district commissioner. They are John F. Johnson Jr., Elwood Mouser, Larry P. Vangennip and Adrian Shell, Republicans, and incumbent Robert W. Gray and Junior W. Long, Democrats. Gray was appointed to the post last year after the death of then-commissioner Jerry Woodfin. Mouser is a former county commissioner.
Second district commissioner candidates are Wayne Whitener, Ralph Collier and Dan Hovis, Republicans, and Kelvn E. Yount, Darold D. Mills and incumbent Junior E. Cook, Democrats.
Other candidates are:
* Assessor: Incumbent James M. Bollinger, a Republican, will face Harold Rover Vannoy, a Democrat.
* Coroner: Incumbent Gene Ward, a Democrat, will face Charles Hutchings, a Republican.
* Democrat Winford Brown is running unopposed as public administrator.
* John W. Reilly is running unopposed as the county surveyor.
