An 8-inch water main broke at the intersection of Old Sprigg Street and Lexington Avenue on Tuesday, causing water pressure to drop and triggering the precautionary boil order. People in the area should boil water for three minutes prior to use, if the water is to be ingested. One teaspoon of unscented household bleach should be used per gallon of water used for cleaning purposes, such as washing dishes.

Water used for bathing doesn't generally need to be boiled, but children should be supervised while bathing so they don't swallow the water.

For more information call the City of Cape Girardeau Water Division at 651-6280.
