A water main break prompted the city of Jackson to issue a precautionary boil-water advisory Thursday afternoon for houses near Francis Drive.
On Francis Drive, address numbers 617, 625, 628, 635, 705, 706, 715, 716, 803, 804, 811, 814, 819, 822, 825, 829 and 830 are included. The property at 1004 Greensferry Road also is included.
Residents in the affected area are directed to boil water vigorously for three minutes before use for drinking, brushing teeth, diluting fruit juices and all other food preparations or consumption. Residents are reminded to allow water to cool sufficiently before drinking. Residents also should dispose of ice cubes immediately and remake ice with boiled water.
In addition, residents should disinfect dishes and other food-contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.
Water for bathing generally does not need to be boiled, but children bathing or using backyard pools should be monitored to prevent ingestion. People with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.
The boil-water advisory took effect as of 12:40 p.m. Thursday and is expected to expire at 4 p.m. today, unless otherwise announced.
Residents also may experience periodic water outages. City crews are working to minimize any disconnections and hand-delivering notices to affected properties to advise them of the work.
