CAPE GIRARDEAU - The Area Wide United Way and Southwestern Bell will co-sponsor a Jan. 31 seminar for non-profit organizations.
The aim of the seminar is to help board members of non-profit agencies learn how to make their organization work better and make their own participation more rewarding and enjoyable. The program will be led by Dr. Patrick Overton, assistant professor of communications and religious studies at Columbia College in Columbia.
Overton also serves as director of the Columbia College Center for Community and Cultural Studies which focuses on developing resources, curriculum, and training experiences to enhance rural and small community cultural development.
He earned a doctorate in communication from the University of Missouri. He has done extensive research on organizational communications, focusing on non-profit agencies.
Topics to be covered include: developing and strengthening organizational vision; volunteer recruitment and development; board member job description; board and staff relationships; fiscal accountability; and board liability and responsibilities. Various handouts will be provided on the subjects, and questions are encouraged.
Area non-profit organizations are asked to encourage their board members to attend the seminar.
Registration will begin at 5 p.m. at the Drury Lodge. Dinner will follow at 6 p.m., with the seminar scheduled from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. The cost of the dinner is $7.85 per person. There is no fee for the seminar.
