Blunt talks jobs at Cape Girardeau visit

For Republican congressman Roy Blunt, the way to stimulate the country's economy is simple -- reverse the policies of President Barack Obama and other Democratic leaders who promote tax increases and trust government instead of the private sector to create jobs.

With a little more than two months until Blunt faces off with Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Kit Bond, that was the theme of Blunt's visit to Cape Girardeau on Wednesday to outline his "Jobs for Missouri" plan.

"Everywhere I go, the biggest question I get is 'Where are the private-sector jobs?'" Blunt said to a small crowd of supporters who gathered at JCS Wireless. "We have to find private-sector jobs because government jobs don't pay the bills. Government jobs are the bills."

Blunt repeated his stance that job creation is the biggest issue that Missouri faces. He criticized the president, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Majority Leader Harry Reid for a $1 trillion increase in government spending, spiraling deficits and an increase in the national debt.

"Those were huge mistakes," he said. "We are facing some big challenges."

All of that has led to economic uncertainties. Blunt wants to repeal the new federal health care law, expand tax breaks for businesses and homebuyers and grant Congress more power to block federal regulations that could be costly.

That's why it hasn't been hard, Blunt said, to convince voters that the Senate race matters.

"Other places are happy with the government being bigger than the people, but in the United States the people should be bigger than the government," he said. "That's what the voters of Missouri are going to have to decide."

Evan Trump, Cape Girardeau County's GOP chairman, called Blunt's stop in Cape Girardeau a great visit.

"He touched on the key issues," Trump said. "We definitely need less government and bring back conservative values back to not only Cape Girardeau County and Missouri, but across the country."
