Blunt in Cape Girardeau to work on Habitat house

Gov. Matt Blunt will join volunteers from the Cape Area Habitat and Big Brothers Big Sisters to work on a Habitat for Humanity house Saturday in Cape Gir­ar­deau.

Also scheduled to be present Saturday are Mayor Jay Knudtson, United Way of Southeast Missouri members, construction suppliers, contractors and current residents of Cape Gir­ar­deau's 26 Habitat homes.

People who buy Habitat homes earn ownership equity through volunteering to work during the building process.

Cape Area Habitat for Humanity is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a not-for-profit community investment corporation promoting affordable housing. Simple homes are built using donated land, supplies, labor and money.

Individuals volunteer, as do people from churches, charities and businesses.

Habitat's current goal is to build and sell 25 new houses in the next five years.
