Staff working the Saturday night shift at the Cape Girardeau Police Department had a bit of a shocking experience when a man out of breath and covered in blood entered the lobby.
Around 7:45 p.m., the 47-year-old China Palace delivery man told police he had been assaulted and robbed by three men carrying firearms.
According to department spokesman Darin Hickey, the men allegedly pulled the delivery man inside a home for sale at 926 College St., where the victim was hit over the head with one of the pistols and suffered other serious injuries. The victim reported the suspects also stole about $2,900 in cash from him that he planned to use to buy a vehicle the following day.
"He was beat up, he was not shot," Hickey said.
After a brief interview with police at the station, the victim was transported to a hospital. Hickey wasn't sure if the man was still admitted.
There's no connection between the alleged suspects and the home that they dragged the victim into, Hickey said.
Authorities spoke to the owner of the residence and the owner said the for-sale sign had been taken out of the ground.
"There was nothing that indicated someone was living there at the time," Hickey said.
Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity between 7:15 and 7:45 p.m. Saturday or with any information about the incident to call the department at 335-6621.
