Organizers of the Depressive and Manic Depressive Support Group of Cape Girardeau are encouraging members of the black community to attend Tuesday night's meeting.
Anchylus Faye Davis, a client and board member of the support group, asked that black people in the area, who may be suffering from stress and, or, depression, "to come out of their closets and darkness to attend this session."
The meeting, entitled "You Are Not Alone," will be a group session on stress and depression, which can sometimes lead to panic attacks, Davis said.
"This will be a way to bring hope and help to one another in coping with our problems or crisis situations," said Davis. "Stress and depression are an illness, not a weakness, and it doesn't mean you are crazy.
"It is like high blood pressure, diabetes or the common cold," she said. "It can be controlled and sometimes cured with the correct diagnosis, medications or just therapy on how to cope with your disorder. If we share our problems and care for each other, our life will be so much better."
The first group session is scheduled to meet from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Capital Room of the Community Counseling Center. Fore more information, call the DMDA office at 334-1100, extension 212, or Davis at 334-6996.
