A bicyclist was killed Sunday in a crash on Highway 3 in Southern Illinois, according to the Illinois State Police.

At 5:12 p.m. Sunday, Jarod Shumaker, 37, of Olive Branch, Illinois, was traveling north on Highway 3 about three miles south of Highway 127 in Alexander County.

A 1991 Buick Century was traveling behind the bicycle, and a 2009 Toyota Corolla was following the Buick.

The Buick's passenger-side mirror struck the bicycle, causing the cyclist to lose control. He bounced from the impact and veered into the center of the northbound lane.

The driver of the Toyota was unable to stop in time and hit the cyclist.

Shumaker was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Buick was cited for improper overtaking of the bicycle, Illinois State Police said.
