Bicyclist killed in accident

A 58-year-old Cape Girardeau man died Saturday night when he rode his bicycle into the path of a vehicle at the intersection of Sprigg Street and Highway 74, Cape Girardeau County Coroner Mike Hurst said.

James E. Harris, a self-employed maintenance man who lived at 518 S. Benton St., was struck by a westbound vehicle on Highway 74 driven by Jacob Goodin of rural Thebes, Ill.

Hurst said Harris was northbound on Sprigg Street and attempted to cross the intersection even though there was a red light signaling Sprigg Street traffic to stop.

Hurst said the motorist had no chance to swerve to miss the bicyclist. "He pedaled right out in front of him," the coroner said.

Harris had been drinking at the time, said Hurst, who ruled it an accidental death. He said Harris was killed instantly.
