The local offices of Browning-Ferris Industries will match proceeds from recyclables collected in an areawide drive during August, and all funds will be donated to the Salvation Army for assistance to flood victims.
Aluminum, newspaper and plastic milk jugs and soda bottles will be collected at the BFI offices in Marion, Ill., and Cape Girardeau during August. BFI will transport the material to its recyclery in Cape Girardeau, where it will be sorted and baled.
All proceeds from the sale of these recyclables, along with those of aluminum being collected throughout the greater St. Louis area, will then be matched, dollar by dollar, by BFI's St. Louis division.
"We felt like it was important to donate something that relates to what we do as a company," said Don Zykan, divisional vice president. "If we can turn potential trash into money to help our neighbors, families and friends hurt by this flood, then we're also honoring our corporate mission, which stresses environmental responsibility."
The containers will be at 716 Skyline Drive in Marion and 530 Nash Road in Cape Girardeau. The recylables need to be loose. Empty bags into the containers and dispose of the bags properly.
