Benefit to take place for Cape Girardeau County deputy who suffered stroke

Hundreds are expected to gather at the Bavarian Halle in Jackson Saturday for a benefit honoring Cape Girardeau County deputy Ron Hobeck, 45, who suffered a hemorrhagic stroke in January while on duty.

The benefit has been organized by a committee staffed with Hobeck's friends and coworkers.

If more than $30,000 is raised, Cape Girardeau County Sheriff John Jordan said he and a number of other deputies will shave their heads.

The benefit, which is being held to help the family pay for Hobeck's stroke therapy, will begin at 5 p.m.

A dinner will start at 6 p.m. and a live auction, featuring St. Louis Cardinals memorabilia and tickets and a variety of items donated by the community, will begin at 7 p.m.

A silent auction will also be going throughout the benefit, and a dance will begin at 9 p.m.

"The community has responded like crazy with donations," Jordan said. "It's going to be a pretty big deal."

Hobeck has been a deputy in Cape Girardeau County for 23 years.

"He's a real fire," said Jordan. "He's recovering pretty remarkably and fighting to return to work."
