Three months ago, Loraine and Kenneth Aldrich "didn't know beans" about the Internet.

Now the Cape Girardeau couple own two computers, surf the Net with the best, and want to download a "chat program" so they can talk with friends across the country.

On Thursday, the Aldrichs attended their third Internet training seminar, this one co-sponsored by Southeast Missouri State University and the Southeast Missourian's online staff.

"Last June, we didn't know beans," Loraine Aldrich said. "Now we are downloading chat programs."

The couple, who are both in their 70s, said the Internet offers lots for senior citizens.

"I'm surprised more of our peers aren't interested," she said.

Five weeks ago they purchased a brand new computer to provide optimum access and speed.

"I like the sports," she said. "You can get up-to-date information. I'm especially interested in tennis."

Kenneth, on the other hand, is interested in E-mail and chat.

"I'm a talker," he said. "We have friends all, over and this will be a good way to stay in touch."

Loraine Aldrich said, "He is hooked."

Others who are interested in learning more about the Internet may attend additional training classes scheduled this fall.

Cost of the two-hour session is $10, which must be paid in advance at the Southeast Missourian, 301 Broadway.

Evening classes are scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. on Oct. 13, Nov. 10 and Dec. 8.

Daytime classes are scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m. on Oct. 9, Nov. 13 and Dec. 11. However, the Oct. 9 class has very few openings.

The class will be held in Room 103 of Dempster Hall on the university campus.

Participation is limited to 35 people per session.

"This class is designed for beginners, and we encourage those with little or no experience to attend," said Joni Adams, project director of SEMissourian.com, the official web site of the Southeast Missourian.

Members of the SEMissourian.com web staff serve as surfing guides and are available to answer questions and help individuals navigate the Internet.

Registrants will receive handouts on surfing sites for work and fun, and Internet tips.

Adams said the Internet class can serve as an introduction for more extensive courses offered by the university to the community.

Interested persons should contact Joni Adams or Peggy Scott at 335-6611 or 1-800-879-1210.
