ST. CHARLES, Mo. -- Freddy the beagle is in the care of St. Charles Animal Control after being in the middle of a violent custody battle among three homeless people.

St. Charles police say a homeless couple assaulted a homeless man with a stick and knife and stole his beagle.

Charged are Donna Judish and her boyfriend, Richard Ayles, both in their 40s.

Freddy was not hurt and is in the custody of Animal Control, whose officers are looking for his owner.

Judish, whose last known address was in Columbia, Mo., was charged with robbery and armed criminal action.

Ayles was charged with assault and armed criminal action.
