Sean Barnes, a Southeast Missouri State University junior art major, was recognized with the "Best in Show" award at the opening reception of the Annual Student Juried Art Exhibition recently.
Barnes, who is from Cape Girardeau, won the "Best in Show" award for his oil painting titled "Eurydice". He also won a merit award for his oil painting titled "Amy".
He was one of 12 to receive an award. Other awards included place and honorable mention in various media.
Maki Hirano, a senior art major from Hamamatsu Shizuokai, Japan, won the "Distinguished Merit" award for her collagraph titled "Brown City."
The exhibition, which is at the Southeast Missouri State University Museum Gallery, showcases the best quality work done by art students in their classes throughout the academic year. Painting, sculpture, drawing, graphic design, printmaking, ceramics and fiber art are currently being shown at the art exhibition.
All art majors submitted two works for the competition. Dan Addington, a professional artist from Chicago, selected 42 pieces from a collection of 100.
Criteria for choosing the best works involved originality, handling of media, strong composition and craftsmanship. All studio areas of the Department of Art are represented.
The exhibition will remain on display through April 29. Admission to the exhibit is free. The museum is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
