BARGE HITS CAIRO BRIDGE; TRAFFIC HALTED 3 HOURS
CAIRO, Ill. -- The Ohio River bridge at Cairo was closed to traffic for three hours Tuesday afternoon when a 24-barge tow struck the bridge's pier. The tow struck the U.S. 51 bridge between Illinois and Kentucky at about noon Tuesday. The bridge remained closed until engineers determined it was safe, said Lt. Two barges were damaged in the crash. A load of corn in one of the barges had to be transferred to another barge.
Following the accident, the barge pulled into the Cairo port.
