Some children in Cape Girardeau and Jackson will be better prepared for the start of school thanks to a school supply drive coordinated by employees at Mercantile Bank.
Larger-than-life Crayola crayon boxes were placed at grocery stores and retail outlets where schools supplies are sold. Response was good.
"We estimate over $1,100 in supplies were collected," said Mary Jo Shelton, who helped organize the drive.
Mercantile Bank developed the campaign as a result of the Area Wide United Way's efforts to get the community involved in the work of service agencies through Days of Caring.
"We were overwhelmed with the results," said Nancy Jernigan, executive director of the Area Wide United Way. We are continually emphasizing the value of volunteering in the community. It not only benefits those who receive the help but also benefits the volunteer. It feels so good to give back."
Supplies will be distributed to Cape Girardeau and Jackson public schools to be given to students.
