The music student of the month of December is Jessica McCuan, daughter of Richard and Kathy McCuan of Jackson. She was the editor-in-chief of the Squawler, co-captain of the varsity volleyball team, bi-weekly columnist for the Southeast Missourian, four year district band member, state "1" rating recipient at the State Solo and ensemble Contest, National Honor Society member, "Just Say No" club member and a two year Student Council member. McCuan plans on attending DePauw University in Greencastle, In.
The January music student of the month is Heather Blackwell, daughter of Judy Blackwell of Jackson. She is a member of Jackson Acting Motivators (JAM), Drama Club, Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD) and chamber choir. Blackwell plans to attend Southeast Missouri State University and major in childhood education with a minor in theatre.
The February music student of the month is Amy Aufdenberg, daughter of Richard and Judy Aufdenberg of Burfordville. She is a member of the Spanish Club, Peer Tutors, National Honor Society, varsity volleyball, Pep Club, Future Business Leaders of America, district band, all-state band, pep band, symphonic band, marching band, Alert, Girls State and Scholastic Honor Roll. Aufdenberg plans on attending Southeast Missouri State University and major in accounting.
The music student of the month for March is Michael Cracraft, son of Mike and Nancy Cracraft of Jackson. He is a member of the Future Business Leaders of America, Science Club -- which he served as president, Spanish Club, National Honor Society, symphonic band, marching band, jazz band, Students Against Drunk Driving, Chemistry Bowl and the Just Say No club. He attends New McKendree United Methodist Church and plays in their brass ensemble. Cracraft plans to attend the University of Missouri-Rolla and major in electrical engineering.
The April music student of the month is Leigh Lichtenegger, daughter of John and Donna Lichtenegger of Jackson. She is a member of chamber choir, National Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America, Pep Club, Spanish Club, the girls soccer team, volleyball team, Junior Rotarian, Junior Optimist, 1995 All-District Choir member with a No. 1 and No. 2 rating for four years. Lichtenegger belongs to the St. Paul Lutheran Church and is a member of their youth group and youth choir. She plans to attend the University of Colorado in Boulder and major in political science.
The May music student of the month is Erika Knowlan, daughter of Jack and Bonnie Knowlan of Jackson. She has been a member of chamber choir, girls choir, choir council, student council, Hi-Step president, FCA historian, Pep Club, the Just Say No club, Junior Rotarian, speech team, tennis team, cross country, varsity girls soccer captain, Girls State delegate and the National Honor Society historian. Knowlan is a member of the First Baptist Church in Jackson and belongs to their youth group and youth choir. She plans on attending the University of Missouri-Columbia and majoring in biology.
Each month, American Legion Post 158 honors a music student of the month. The students also receive a $100.00 U.S. Savings Bond.
