The Cape Girardeau Municipal Band will open its 1993 season Wednesday. This marks the 67th concert season under the sponsorship of the city of Cape Girardeau.
The public is invited to bring a lawn chair and enjoy the concert in Capaha Park, beginning at 8 p.m.
The band will present 11 free Wednesday evening concerts this summer in the band shell at Capaha Park, ending Aug. 18. The concert schedule will be altered during the second week when the band will perform Friday, June 11 during Riverfest. This concert begins at 8:30 p.m. on the main stage on Spanish St.
The Municipal Band will be directed by Jon Kent Fisher. This mark's his 16th season as director.
The muny band will also continue its "Celebrity Guest Conductor" program this season. City Councilman Melvin Gateley, who also serves as coordinator of the Cape Bicentennial Celebration, will lead the band for a selection tonight. During each concert this season, the band will dedicate a song to the Bicentennial celebration.
Special guest performers for the first concert will be the award-winning Central High School Jazz Band, under the direction of Ronald Nall.
Other selections on the program will include: Colossus of Columbia March, Ozark Overture, Gershwin, Americans We, Second American Folk Rhapsody, and selections from the Broadway musical "Promises, Promises."
