Back-to-school purchases such as clothing and school supplies are exempt from sales tax for the time period. While the weekend benefits are statewide, the City of Cape Girardeau has “opted out” of the sales tax exemption. Even though the City opted out, state taxes will still not apply to purchases within city limits.

Other municipalities and counties in the region forego sales taxes during the weekend.
