Baby taken in carjacking found safe at St. Louis hospital; father killed

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- A 10-month-old girl was found safe at a St. Louis hospital Tuesday morning, several hours after a carjacker shot and killed the child's father then stole his SUV with the girl still strapped inside.

St. Louis County police spokesman Rick Eckhard said Ivory Roach was found in good shape at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. The stolen 2000 Lincoln Navigator was also found at the hospital.

Hospital spokeswoman Kathy Holleman said two hospital employees, a mother and son, noticed the SUV in the parking lot and were aware that police were looking for a similar vehicle.

"They both saw the baby in the car," Holleman said. The workers found an unlocked door on the SUV and removed the child. Ivory was in good condition at the hospital.

Police were still searching for the suspect, described as a black man, bald with facial hair and last seen wearing a white T-shirt.

The carjacking happened about 10:30 p.m. Monday in north St. Louis County. Police responded to calls of shots being fired and found Tionna Roach, 31, dead in parking lot.

His SUV, with his daughter inside, was missing. She was seated in a child safety seat in the rear of the vehicle.

Police activated the St. Louis Area Regional Amber Alert, which notifies media and prompts messages about missing children on electronic highway signs.
