Automated trash pickup begins today in Cape Girardeau and the city Public Works Department has a few tips for residents to make sure it goes smoothly.
The most important thing to remember is the difference between the tan trash bins and the green recycling bins, said Mike Tripp, solid waste supervisor for the city. Trash truck drivers have been told not to empty recycling bins placed at the curb on the day garbage is to be collected and not to empty trash bins placed at the curb on the day that recycling is to be collected. Also, Tripp said, no bins except the new containers provided by the city will be emptied. If a bin is not emptied, drivers will put a tag on it explaining why, he said.
In addition, Tripp advised residents to make sure their bins are not blocked by mailboxes, utility poles or vehicles. In areas with a lot of on-street parking, the bins should be placed with the rear wheels against the curb. In other areas, placing the bins near the curb should work for the drivers, he said.
