Authorities: 'Good leads' on suspect in Sunday morning shooting

Cape Girardeau police were still investigating a Sunday morning shooting Wednesday that injured a 21-year-old local man.

No one has come forward with information about a possible shooter, according to Sgt. Jason Selzer, spokesman for the Cape Girardeau Police Department.

Still, Selzer said investigators have some "good leads" on a suspect.

"But right now they don't have enough evidence to get a warrant," Selzer said.

Officers responded to the 1000 block of Bloomfield Street around 3:30 a.m. Sunday, after receiving several 911 calls of shots fired in the area.

Around 100 people were gathered around the injured man when the first officer arrived on scene.

Selzer said officers got the call of shots fired on Bloomfield Street just after breaking up a series of fights at The Venue, where a private party was being held. The same group from The Venue had then gathered at Bloomfield and Hanover streets.

The street gatherings are nothing new, according to Selzer, and unless there are clear violations of the law or complaints from residents in the area police can't stop them from happening.

"We had two extra officers working Friday night and one extra Saturday night, because we know during the summer we get gatherings like these," Selzer said. "The thing is you can't sit down there and monitor it the entire time. There's other things going on that require our officers' attention."

Cape Girardeau police are still asking people with new information on the Sunday shooting to call the station at 335-6621.
