Cheryl Harness of Independence, Mo., shows a page dummy of her historical book, "Ghosts of the White House," while telling about her career as an author and illustrator to fourth- and fifth-grade students Thursday, March 13, 2014 at Jackson's North Elementary School in Fruitland. "History and dead people are my specialty," Harness said. "History is the ultimate teacher: Who we've been is who we are, and who we might become." She stressed the importance of reading books and using libraries for students to achieve their future goals.
