A "Workshop on Augmentative and Alternative Communication: Current and Emerging Technology" will be held April 16 from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Cape Girardeau Holiday Inn.

The workshop is co-sponsored by the Lorberg Center for Speech and Hearing, the department of communication disorders and the College of Health and Human Services at Southeast Missouri State University, and the Missouri Speech, Language and Hearing Association.

The workshop will feature Gail M. Van Tatenhove as a guest speaker.

Workshop participants may receive continuing education credit.

Cost of the workshop is $30 for professionals, $25 for members of the Missouri Speech, Language and Hearing Association, and $15 for students.

Van Tatenhove has extensive experience as a communication specialist on interdisciplinary teams assessing children and adults for augmentative communication systems. Currently, she serves as a Minspeak applications specialist for Prentke Romich in Ohio and Semantic Compaction Systems in Pennsylvania, which manufacture alternative communication systems for people who cannot communicate verbally.

Van Tatenhove is employed in private practice specializing in augmentative and alternative communicative systems in Orlando, Fla.

"The more knowledgeable we are in this field, the better we will meet the needs of individuals through augmentative communication," said Mary Ann Vogelsang, chairman of the communication disorders department at Southeast.
