Saying he is taking "swift and decisive action" against telemarketers who violate the state's new no-call law, Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon filed his fourth lawsuit in five weeks, this time against a Florida alarm system company.
The lawsuit, filed in St. Louis, asks for a restraining order be issued against ADT Security Services, Inc., of Boca Raton, Fla., Nixon said at a news conference in Cape Girardeau Monday.
Nixon said that the nationally known alarm system company has repeatedly violated the law by making telemarketing calls to consumers on the no-call list.
"Now, alarm bells should be ringing at ADT and other groups that want to ignore the law," Nixon said. "The tide is clearly turning for Missourians who want to enjoy peace and quiet at home."
Nixon said his office had received more than 200 complaints from Missourians on the no-call list about telemarketing efforts by ADT.
The lawsuit is the fourth filed by Nixon in the five weeks since the law took effect, Nixon said. Four other telemarketers have settled out of court, paying a total of $35,000 in penalties. One of those lawsuits yet to be settled was against a television psychic hot line best known for promoting Miss Cleo's psychic readings.
Nixon said that as of Monday, more than 793,000 home telephone numbers had been placed on the no-call list, a number which Nixon said represents 2 million Missourians.
Missourians who do not have their home telephone numbers on the no-call list may still register those numbers at any time at no cost, Nixon said. They can do so online at www.moago.org or by calling toll-free 1 (866) 662-2551 or 1 (866) NO-CALL-1.
