At least 10 killed in holiday weekend crashes in Missouri

At least 10 people have died on Missouri roads during the Memorial Day holiday weekend, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said.

Danny Calahan, 50, of Galena, was killed Monday night in Stone County. The patrol said his car left a road about three miles west of Galena, striking a tree and catching fire. Calahan was dead aat the scene.

Michael Harris, 49, of the Bootheel city of Caruthersville, was killed Monday afternoon after his motorcycle crashed into a turning vehicle that failed to yield, the patrol said. Harris was thrown from his eastbound motorcycle and hit by a second westbound vehicle around 3 p.m. Monday on Missouri 84 in Caruthersville.

Shelley Sherman, 50, of Del City, Okla., was killed early Monday in Pulaski County. The patrol said Sherman, driving east on Interstate 44, died when the vehicle crossed the median, striking a guardrail on the other side of the highway, then hitting an embankment and overturning.

Christopher Duvall, 27, of Grandview, was killed early Sunday when the vehicle he was driving ran off a county road eight miles west of Stockton, struck a bridge embankment, turned over and caught fire, the patrol said.

Three members of a suburban Chicago family were killed in a one-car accident Saturday on Interstate 55 in southeast Missouri, the patrol said.

Rita Domitro, 47, of Franklin Park,, Ill., lost control of the vehicle she was driving and it skidded off the road and rolled down an embankment, the patrol said. Domitro's husband, Werner, 45, and her 12-year-old son, Andrew, were thrown from the car. All three died in the accident five miles north of Jackson shortly after 6 p.m. Saturday.

Jessica Pollack, 19, of St. Charles, died Saturday after being thrown from an all-terrain vehicle that left a road in Stone County near Table Rock Lake, striking a piece of asphalt and a tree.

Charollette McDonald, 17, of Buffalo, was killed Saturday evening when the car she was driving crossed the center line and struck an oncoming pickup truck head-on in Dallas County, about three miles south of Buffalo.

Alexis Forrester, 23 months, was killed Friday in Washington County when run over by a car in a driveway near her rural home near Cadet.

Only two deaths were reported during the Memorial Day counting period last year, which lasts from 6 p.m. Friday until midnight on Memorial Day. In 2001, 16 deaths were reported during the holiday weekend.
