The Southeast Missourian asked people about the six-month-old television ratings system. A new list of program content indicators is set to be added to the system by Oct. 1.
Pam Jackson: "More than anything, I am curious as to why they put a certain rating on a show. It doesn't really cause me to change my mind about watching it. I think most people have already decided what show they will watch, but it would be good to have more information."
Jewel McLain: "I don't think the symbols they have now are very clear. It's also so quick on the screen. It should be on longer. I have decided not to watch some shows because of the rating. People with children should have more information to decide what to watch."
Ralph Mayfield: "I like to read the symbols so you can have an idea of what a program will be about and decide whether or not to watch it. Sometimes I have decided not to watch a program because of the symbol. It would help it even more if there could be more content given."
June Dunning: "I think the symbols are good and the new indicators should be a big help to parents. Sometimes you start to watch a show and all of a sudden you see something that you don't expect. It kind of irritates me, and I want to turn it off."
Cindy Brotherton: "I think the symbols are very helpful. You can just look quickly at the corner of the TV and make sure that it's an age-appropriate show for children. My children are under age 6, so if I see a TV-14, I switch channels fast. More information would be a big help."
