The Southeast Missouri Council on the Arts is now accepting applicants for the annual Summer Art Workshops.
The classes will be held at 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. or 1 to 4 p.m. in Southeast Missouri State University's Art Building, which is located on the corner of Circle Drive and Henderson Street.
Art teachers Carol Horst and Brenda Seyer have planned a curriculum for children ages 6-16.
This year's "Imagine Art" encourages youths to use their imaginations and develop their skills, both mental and manual.
"Shapes of Images," held June 27-July 1, will deal with sculpting in clay, plaster, paper, wire and more.
"Exploring Images," scheduled for July 11-15, involves drawing with graphite, pastels, ink, charcoal, and more, on a wide variety of surfaces.
"Rainbows of Images," set for July 18-23, is designed to provide experience in painting with watercolor, acrylic and tempra in ways both historic and new.
"Illustrating Images," scheduled for July 25-29, will utilize cartoons, with letters, symbols, designs and elements of commercial illustration.
All classes are structured for a child's age group and skill level.
Seyer will help the younger children attain skills while Horst will challenge the older kids to elicit analytical and technical skills.
To recognize the achievements of these youths, Gallery 100 and the University Museum will host an exhibit of the Summer Art Workshops' best work in September.
Each class costs $40. Current Arts Council members may register for $35 per class. Classes will be limited to 15 students per teacher. All supplies will be provided and scholarships are available on a limited basis for families on the free-lunch or reduced-lunch programs in the schools.
Children who participate in the workshops are asked to wear old clothes since many of the supplies that are used will cause a permanent stain.
Flyers and registration forms are available at the Arts Council office, 1707 Mt. Auburn Rd.
Registration deadline is Tuesday.
