JACKSON -- More than 100 paintings, a mix of mostly watercolors and oils, are on display at Cox Hall in Jackson.

The paintings were made by 16 regional artists. Some are for sale and others are on display just for viewer enjoyment.

An open house Sunday kicked off a weeklong display of the art work. The show will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Saturday.

June Ingall, Elwanda Seabaugh and Herb Wickham were instrumental in organizing the art show.

"We felt people needed some place to display their talents," said Ingall.

There is no organized art club, but most of the works were from students of Nancy Collier. Collier teaches two art classes a week.

"When I closed my store, The Paint Place, the ladies didn't want to stop painting," said Collier. "Elwanda was gracious enough to open her home to us and now we have our own studio."

Jan McClanahan, a Cape Girardeau realtor, likes to take a break from her busy schedule to paint.

"I go to the Tuesday morning classes," said McClanahan. "That time is set aside for me."

McClanahan also enjoys having Collier as a teacher. "She knows just how to tell us what we've done right while telling us how to make it better."

"I think it's important for people to know why they are doing something, not just how to do it," said Collier. "They need to know why one color should be placed against another or why a certain tool will produce a better effect."
