Art for the Health of It awards announced
The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri and Southeast Missouri Hospital have announced the award winners for their annual Art for the Health of It juried exhibition. Best in Show was awarded to James V. Parker of Cape Girardeau for his entry "Fiori II." Jurors awards went to Connie Blattner of Jackson for "Vase"; Linda Buis of Perryville, Mo., for "All Done Picking Pansies!"; Elise Young of Dexter, Mo., for "Memories"; and Vicki Outman of Jackson for "Colours of Winter." The contest included 154 entries from artists living with a 175-mile radius of Cape Girardeau.
Historical novelist Suzanne Lyon will appear at the Cape Girardeau Public Library, 711 N. Clark Ave., at 7 p.m. on Wednesday to discuss and sign her new book "A Heart for Any Fate." The Southeast Wind Symphony has two upcoming concerts, one is in St. Louis on March 12 and one here in Cape Girardeau on March 14. The symphony was asked by the St. Louis Symphony to be a special guest for the March 12 performance, which will be at 3 p.m. at the Thomas N. Keating Performance Center on the campus of Kirkwood High School in Kirkwood, Mo. The March 14 performance will take place at Academic Auditorium at 8 p.m. The symphony will feature a program of Beethoven's First Symphony, with featured performances by this year's concert and aria winners. WASHINGTON, D.C. -- U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson has announced the Congressional Art contest for Missouri's Eighth Congressional District. The winning artwork will be featured as part of the national exhibition in the U.S. Capitol in May 2007. Ten honorable mentions will be selected along with one winner. The Southeast Missouri State University Department of Theatre and Dance will present its Spring Dance concert Thursday through March 11 at 8 p.m. The concert will be held in the Parker Dance Studio on campus and will feature original choreography by students in a variety of styles -- modern, hip-hop, jazz and lyrical. ST. LOUIS -- Auditions for The Muny's 2006 Adult Singing and Dancing Ensembles will be held March 11 and 12 at the Performing Arts Center at St. Louis University High School. All people auditioning should bring a non-returnable photograph, must be 18 years or older and bring 16 bars of sheet music from a standard musical theatre repertoire. ST. LOUIS -- Civil Pictures has won a Telly Award for its documentary, "The World's Greatest Fair," co-directed by Southeast Missouri State University graduate Scott Huegerich. The awards recognize outstanding local, regional and cable TV commercials and programs, as well as video and film productions, from all 50 states. The documentary tells the story of the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair through quotes from people who experienced it.
