JACKSON -- A six-week arthritis self-help course designed to help people with arthritis as well as their families and friends will be held on six consecutive Thursdays beginning Sept. 3. The program will continue through Oct. 8 at the St. Francis Information Center at Jackson.
Classes will be held from 1-3 p.m. at the Information Center at 2122 on Highway 61 East in Jackson's Heartland Plaza. The course instructors will include St. Francis orthopedics staff nurse Marilyn Duncan and arthritis volunteer Neva Mowery. Both are trained arthritis self-help course instructors.
The course will cover a variety of topics including types of arthritis, exercise, techniques for coping with pain, nutrition, problem solving, joint protection, and ways to overcome depression. The course was developed by Stanford Arthritis Center and is based on information contained in the Arthritis Helpbook written by Dr. James Fries and Kate Lorig.
There is a $25 enrollment fee, which covers the cost of course materials and includes copies of the book. To register or for more information, call Kathy Casteel at the St. Francis Information Center, 243-5222.
