A Monday morning arson is under investigation.

About 1 a.m., a resident of the 2000 block of Brink Street called police to report hearing an explosion at the back of a house, said Darin Hickey, public information officer for the Cape Girardeau Police Department.

The resident went outside to find flames coming from the siding on the house, Hickey said.

The resident smelled a strong gasoline odor and reported seeing someone running away, Hickey said.

The fire, which was extinguished quickly, caused no injuries but damaged the siding on the house, he said.

Police do not have a motive in the case, which remains under investigation, Hickey said.
