A number of area teenagers have been selected to attend the American Legion Boys State of Missouri. It will be held June 13-20 on the campus of Central Missouri State University At Warrensburg.
Those attending learn more about the workings of government through hands-on experience. It is run as a democracy, and all participants may vote and are eligible to hold office.
Among those area boys participating are:
William Ryan Woods, 16, is sponsored by the Cape Girardeau Lion's Club. He will be a senior this fall at Cape Girardeau Central High School. He is the son of Bill and Bonnie Woods, 1433 Parkmore. His school activities include: varsity soccer team, swim team, track team, chamber choir, Beta club, and National Honor Society. He is also a member of Grace United Methodist Church.
David Tanner, 17, is sponsored by the Evening Exchange Club. He will be a senior this fall at Notre Dame High School. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. R. Neal Tanner, 1565 Lexington. At school, he is a member of National Honor Society, student council, liturgy committee, FBLA, pep club, vice president of junior class, varsity letterman in soccer, basketball and baseball, concert choir, and cast of Notre Dame musicals. He is also a lector at St. Vincent de Paul Church, a junior volunteer at Southeast Missouri Hospital, and a member of the JCPenney teen board. He was honored by Who's Who Among American High School Students this year.
Eric Vogt, 16, is the son of Fred and Pat Vogt, of Route 4 jackson. His trip to Boys State is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club. He will be a senior this fall at Cape Girardeau Central High School. His school activities include: National Honor Society, Beta club, letterman's club, life scout and the Cape Girardeau Swim Team.
Greg Rubel, 17, is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club. He will be a senior at Notre Dame High School this fall. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Rubel of Route 1 Cape Girardeau. At school, he is a member of SADD, National Honor Society, student council, concert choir, pep club, and varsity baseball and basketball. He was also junior class president.
Scott Hopper, 16, is the son of Don and Carolyn Hopper, 1928 Weissinger. His trip to Boys State is sponsored by the Evening Optimists and Louis K. Juden Post 63 of the American Legion. He will be a senior at Cape Girardeau Central High School this fall. His school activities include: Beta club, National Honor Society, and the varsity basketball and baseball teams. He is also a member of the American Legion baseball team and Trinity Lutheran Church.
Boys State has been sponsored by the American Legion of Missouri since 1938. This 1992 session will bring together 986 boys from nearly every county in the state.
