A number of area boys are attending the American Legion Boys State of Missouri this week. It runs through Saturday on the campus of Central Missouri State University at Warrensburg.
Those attending learn more about the workings of government through hands-on experience. It is run as a democracy, and all participants may vote and are eligible to hold office.
A total of 90 boys from Southeast Missouri will attend. Among local area boys participating are:
Matthew D. Whitten, a student at Cape Girardeau Central High School, is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Stephen Whitten. He is a member of the Letterman's Club, Spanish Club and was named to Who's Who Among American High School Students. He is active in varsity tennis and played the number two position this year. He is also a member of Centenary United Methodist Church.
Blake Tilley, a student at Cape Girardeau Central High School, is the son of Harold and Carla Tilley. He is a member of the Lettermen's Club, Beta Club, Spanish Club and plays varsity football. He was nominated for Who's Who in American High Schools, is a member of Young Life and attends Cape Bible Chapel. He served in Australia with International Teen Missions.
Tom Arteme, a student at Thomas W. Kelly School at Benton, is the son of Jime and Margaret Arteme. He is a three year Letterman in varsity basketball. He is on the honor roll, a member of BETA Club, FFA, SADD, Pep Club and FBLA. He is an Eagle Scout and member of Troop 25 and a member of St. Denis Church and CYC. Arteme plays summer league basketball and is a member of the Chaffee Senior Babe Ruth baseball team. He plans to attend World Youth Week in Colorado in August.
Jim Johnson, a student at Notre Dame High School, is the son of Jack and Joan Johnson. He is a varsity soccer player and assists with the grade school soccer camp. He is on the B honor roll and served as police chief on student government day. Johnson is also a member of St. Vincent's Church.
Seth Benton, a student at Central High School, is the son of Tim and Joy Benton. He is aon the B honor roll and a third year member of the varsity tennis and soccer teams. He has been named to Who's Who Among American High School Students and was also chosen to attend the National Young Leadership Conference in Washington D.C. in October. Benton is a member of Lynnwood Baptist Church.
