Twenty-three students from Southeast Missouri attended Boys State last week. In all, 980 young men from across the state attended the weeklong event.
Missouri Boys State teaches boys about government through participation in a mythical state designed to function exactly like the state of Missouri. Each local participant was sponsored by an area civic club.
Those attending included Dan Groesbeck of Cape Central High School. He was sponsored by the Cape Girardeau Lions Club. Groesbeck is the son of Doug and Linda Groesbeck. He attends La Croix United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau and plays on his high school golf team. Groesbeck is member of Central High School Marching Band and serves as a drum major.
John W. Clark of Cape Central High School was sponsored by the Cape Girardeau Rotary Club. He is the son of Leonard and Leatha Clark. Clark participates in Young Life and Cape Central Marching Band. He also is a football and track letterman and attends St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Cape Girardeau.
Timothy M. Chisman of Cape Central High School was sponsored by the Louis K. Juden Post 63 and the Cape Girardeau Excelsior Optimist Club. Chisman is the son of Rodger Chisman and Peggy Riggs. Chisman competes in cross country, diving and track for Central High School. He is involved in Young Life and received a Scholar Athlete Award.
Drew Seib of Cape Central High School was sponsored by the Cape Girardeau Evening Optimist Club. Seib is the son of Mike and Twyla Seib of Cape Girardeau. He is involved in Beta Club, National Honor Society, Spanish Club and Student Senate. Seib plays tennis for Central and participates in Chamber Choir.
Wade H. Bartels of Jackson High School was sponsored by the Jackson Elks Lodge. He is the son of Wesly and Brenda Bartels. Bartels is a member of National Honor Society and is a varsity football player and wrestler for Jackson High School. He is student body vice president and attends Immaculate Conception Church in Jackson.
Andrew Luehrs of Jackson High School was sponsored by the Altenthal-Joerns Post 158 of the American Legion. Luehrs is the son of Ed and Peggy Luehrs. His activities include treasurer of National Honor Society, president of Drama Club, co-captain of the Speech team and treasurer of Quill and Scroll. He also is involved in Future Business Leaders of America and the Marching Band.
Brent Schumer of Jackson High School was sponsored by the Brown-Twitty Post 595 of New Madrid. Schumer is the son of Harold Schumer and Gayle Foster. He runs cross country and is a member of the French Club and Chamber Choir. Schumer went to the 1997 Missouri Scholars Academy and attends Immaculate Conception Church in Jackson.
Mitch Ogles of Cape Central High School was sponsored by the Cape Girardeau West Rotary Club. Ogles is the son of Jerry and Jane Ogles. He is a member of National Honor Society and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Ogles is a varsity football and baseball player and is on the A Honor Roll.
Lucas Fuemmeler of Cape Central High School was sponsored by the Louis K. Juden Post 63. He is the son of Steve and Emily Fuemmeler. Fuemmeler is a varsity soccer player and a member of the Chamber Choir. He participates in Young Life, Student Senate and attends Trinity Lutheran Church.
Nathan Skinner of Cape Central High School was sponsored by the Cape Girardeau West Rotary Club. He is the son of Roger and Joanie Skinner of Cape Girardeau. Skinner runs on the cross country team, swims and plays tennis on the varsity level for Cape Central. He attends Grace Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau and Young Life.

Burger is president of Student Council, vice president of National Honor Society, vice president of Future Teachers of America and treasurer of the 4-H Club. He is a football and track letterman and is listed in Who's Who among American High School Students. He is a member of the St. Joseph Parish in Scott City.
Ryan Fenwick of Notre Dame High School was sponsored by Cape Girardeau Exchange Club. He is the son of Steve and Nancy Fenwick. Fenwick's activities include president of National Honor Society and president of Student Council. He is a member of the varsity soccer and baseball teams at Notre Dame. He is a member of St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Cape Girardeau.
Andrew Buchheit of Notre Dame High School was sponsored by the Cape Girardeau Kiwanis Club. He is the son of Allen and Jeanette Buchheit. Buchheit is vice president of the senior class. He has participated in Youth in Government Day and Youth Mission Trips. He has already received a Bright Flight scholarship.
Brent Schreiner of Oak Ridge R-6 was sponsored by the Lamplighters Extension Club. He is the son of Martin and Rhonda Conrad of Daisy and Doug and Letha Schreiner of Perryville. Schreiner plays baseball and basketball for Oak Ridge. He participates in marching band, Student Council and the yearbook staff. He attends First Baptist Church in Oak Ridge.
