Area schools recently named valedictorians and salutatorians of their graduating classes. The students' cumulative grade-point averages were used to determine their class rank. Following are the top graduates:
Cape Central
Kimberly Gail Pulley is valedictorian and Aaron Michael Bruening salutatorian at Cape Girardeau Central High School.
Pulley, daughter of Gene and Judy Pulley, was student body president her senior year. She was also involved in Beta club, Future Business Leaders of America, pep club and National Honor Society.
She plans to attend Southeast Missouri State University, where she has a Governor's Scholarship and a Bright Flight Scholarship.
Bruening, son of Jim and Fay Bruening, served as president of the National Honor Society and played baseball and basketball. In 1994 he won the Academic Athlete Award and the NAACP Academic Award.
He plans to attend Southeast, where he has a Governor's Scholarship and a Bright Flight Scholarship.
Jackson
Daniel Perry is valedictorian and Christine Conklin and Joy Lewis salutatorians at Jackson High School
Perry, son of James and Susan Perry, was involved in the "Just Say No" club and was captain of the varsity soccer team. He recently received Jackson's Scholar Athlete Award.
He plans to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Missouri-Rolla. He is the recipient of the Curators Scholarship, a Bright Flight Scholarship, a UMR Mechanical Engineering Scholarship and a UMR University Scholarship.
Conklin, daughter of Patrick and Sandra Conklin, was a member of the marching band, symphonic band, jazz band, debate team and National Honor Society.
She plans to attend the University of Missouri-Columbia, majoring in music performance. She has received the Curators Scholarship and a Bright Flight Scholarship.
Lewis, daughter of John and Barb Lewis, was involved in Student Council, Scholar Bowl, National Honor Society, Drama club and band. She participated in track, cross country, volleyball and soccer.
She will attend Southeast, where she has a Governor's Scholarship. She will major in biology.
Notre Dame
Adam Cox is valedictorian and Christine Michelle Auer salutatorian at Notre Dame High School.
Cox, son of Jerry and Jane Cox of Delta, was involved in concert choir, scholar bowl, annual musical productions and National Honor Society. As a sophomore he attended the Missouri Scholar's Academy and as a junior he attended Harvard University's summer program in Cambridge.
He plans to attend Milliken University in Decatur, Ill., where he has received an Honors Scholarship, valedictorian award and talent award.
Auer is the daughter of Margie Auer and Andy Auer. During high school she played volleyball and softball and was the manager of the girls basketball team. She was involved in the annual musicals, pep club, Spanish club and was president of the National Honor Society.
She plans to attend Saint Louis University, where she will receive the Dean's Scholarship. She eventually hopes to go to medical school. Auer has also received the Bright Flight Scholarship, Missouri University's Curators scholarship, a Wal-Mart scholarship, and a local and national Elks scholarship.
Scott City
Michelle Keesee is valedictorian and Ralf Emerson salutatorian at Scott City High School.
Keesee, daughter of William and Shirley Keesee, was involved in National Honor Society, FBLA, band and pom pon squad. She was on the yearbook staff and also ran track.
She will attend Southeast, majoring in business administration. She received the President's Scholarship and the Missouri Leaders Scholarship from Southeast.
Emerson, son of David and Margo Emerson, played basketball and ran track during high school. In 1993 he was the state champion in intermediate hurdles. Emerson was also district president of FBLA and a member of National Honor Society and student council.
He hopes to pursue a degree in biology at Central Methodist University in Fayette, where he has academic and athletic scholarship.
Oak Ridge
Angie Hall is valedictorian and Sally Wibbenmeyer salutatorian at Oak Ridge High School.
Hall, daughter of Kenneth and Wanda Hall, plans to attend Southeast. She has received an Oak Ridge Town Board Scholarship and a President's Scholarship.
Wibbenmeyer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Wibbenmeyer, plans to attend Stephens College in Columbia. She has received a National Honor Society Scholarship and an Honor's Scholarship.
Delta
Melissa Adams is valedictorian and Jennifer Hinkebein salutatorian at Delta High School.
Adams, daughter of Robert and LaDonna Adams, participated in National Honor Society, FBLA and pep club. During her senior year she served as president of the Future Homemakers of America.
She plans to attend Southeast, majoring in accounting.
Hinkebein is the daughter of Charles and Glenda Hinkebein. During high school she was president of the student council, vice-president of FHA and treasurer of FBLA. She played basketball for four years.
She plans to attend Southeast, majoring in elementary education.
Kelly
Bridget Hamm is valedictorian and Shawn Forrest Guiling salutatorian at Thomas W. Kelly High School in Benton.
Hamm, daughter of Glen and Nancy Hamm, was involved in band, Beta club, Future Homemakers of America and foreign language club. She was a majorette for two years.
Hamm plans to attend Southeast, majoring in nursing. She received the President's Scholarship and a Lone Star Scholarship.
Guiling, son of Forrest and Gail Guiling, was student council representative, art club treasurer, FBLA vice president and Beta club treasurer and reporter.
Guiling plans to attend Southeast. His major is undecided.
Scott County Central
Kelly Owens is valedictorian and Angela Walker salutatorian at Scott County Central High School.
Owens, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gary Owens, was involved in Beta club and cheerleading during high school. She plans to pursue a degree in nursing at Southeast.
Walker, granddaughter of Louise Williams, participated in Beta club, band and softball. She plans to attend Spellman College in Atlanta.
Meadow Heights
Pamela Mungle is valedictorian and Emily Rhodes salutatorian at Meadow Heights High School.
Mungle, daughter of John and Janet Mungle, participated in band, student council, Beta club, volleyball and cheerleading. She received the National Scholar-Athlete Award and a National Distinguished Athlete Award.
She plans to attend Southwest Missouri State University, where she has a Regents Scholarship and an athletic scholarship. She also received the Student Council Scholarship and the Wal-Mart Scholarship.
Rhodes, daughter of Elzie and Linda Sue Rhodes, enjoys playing guitar.
She plans to attend Mineral Area College to major in special education or child development. She is the recepient of a Capital Bank scholarship, a Mercantile Bank scholarship, a Missouri National Guard scholarship and a Missouri PTA scholarship.
Perryville
Cicely Miederhoff is valedictorian and Kim Valleroy salutatorian of Perryville High School.
Miederhoff, daughter of Kaye and Terry Miederhoff, participated in drama club, National Honor Society and concert choir. She also received the highest rating at the state music contest and was awarded Concert Choir Member of the Year.
She plans to attend the University of Missouri-Columbia to pursue a biology degree with a minor in music. She hopes to go to medical school after college. Meideroff has received the Curators Scholarship, a Bright Flight Scholarship and the National Honor Society Scholarship.
Valleroy, daughter of Eldon and Sandy Valleroy, was involved in National Honor Society, marching band, concert band and flag corps.
She hopes to become a virologist, starting at Southeast and eventually achieving a doctoral degree. She received the President's Scholarship to Southeast.
St. Vincent's
Anita Meyer is valedictorian and Jennifer Paulus salutatorian at St. Vincent's High School in Perryville.
Meyer, daughter of Leo Joseph and Rose Diane Meyer, participated in National Honor Society, pep club, football and softball. She was also editor-in-chief and managing editor of the "Gleaner."
She plans to pursue a degree in journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia. She has received a Curators Scholarship, a Bright Flight Scholarship, a Wal-Mart scholarship and an Elks Most Valuable Student award.
Paulus, daughter of Russell and Kathleen Paulus, played volleyball, powder puff football and soccer during high school. She was involved in student council, pep club and Spanish club. Paulus also served as assistant editor of the newspaper staff and class president.
She plans to attend the University of Missouri at Kansas City and major in accounting. She has received the Curators Scholarship and the Elks Most Valuable Student Scholarship.
Oran
Rebeccah Nothdurft is valedictorian and Stacy Pobst salutatorian at Oran High School.
Nothdurft, daughter of Glenn and Susan Nothdurft, was president of the Beta club, a member of student council, and district treasurer of FBLA. She placed first in the state FBLA typing contest and second in the state in FBLA public speaking. Nothdurft was also a member of the volleyball and track teams.
She plans to attend the University of Mississippi, where she has an Academic Excellence Scholarship and a marching band scholarship.
Pobst, daughter of Kenny and Joyce Pobst, was involved in FBLA, FHA, Beta club, flag auxiliary and the volleyball team.
She plans to pursue a degree in business administration at Southeast, where she has a President's Scholarship.
Advance
Amy Schatte is valedictorian and Kathy Jenkins and Michelle Wiseman salutatorians at Advance High School.
Schatte, daughter of H.L. and Bernice Schatte, participated in Beta club, German club and FHA. She also served as president of FBLA, editor of The Hornet and class secretary.
She plans to attend Southeast, where she has a President's Scholarship. She intends to major in political science and business and minor in German.
Marquand-Zion
Sarah Dees is valedictorian at Marquand-Zion High School. Her twin brother, Jason, is salutatorian. They are the children of Ellen and Stephen Dees.
Sarah Dees was involved in Beta club, FBLA, German club and was on the yearbook staff.
Jason Dees participated in Beta club, FBLA, German club and varsity basketball.
They plan to attend Southeast.
Fredericktown
Jill Mooney is valedictorian and Jennifer Wengler salutatorian at Fredericktown High School.
Mooney, daughter of Bob and Cheryl Mooney, was a member of the band, math club and student council. She was flag corp captain and Beta club secretary.
She plans to attend Northeast Missouri State University. She has received a Northeast Academic Scholarship, the President's Honorary Scholarship and a Bright Flight Scholarship.
Wengler, daughter of Bobby and Betty Wengler, served as FFA president and was active in FBLA, Beta club, and math club.
She plans to attend the University of Missouri-Rolla to study civil engineering. She has received the Curators Scholarship and the Women in Engineering Scholarship.
