He has served as a nuclear mechanic aboard two fast attack submarines. He has earned two Navy Achievement Medals in the past six years.

DaWalt will complete a criminal justice degree at the University of Memphis in 1996. He is married to the former Dante Santoni of Cape Girardeau. The couple has four daughters.
