Dr. Joe P. Dunn, son of Mr. and Ms. Lyman H. Dunn, Route 3 in Jackson, was named Charles A. Dana Professor of History and Politics during the graduation ceremony at Converse College in Spartanburg, S.C.
The award citation recognized Dunn as "the institution's premier scholar and teacher."
Dunn also serves as chairman of the department, humanities division coordinator, director of the freshman honors program and director of summer programs at the liberal arts women's college where he has been for 15 years. In 1988, he was awarded the Kathryne Amelia Browne Award for excellence in teaching, and in 1990, he received a Joseph J. Malone Fellowship to study in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.
Dunn graduated from Southeast Missouri State University in 1967. He earned his M.A. (1968) and Ph.D.(1973) in history from the University of Missouri, and post-doctorate work in political science at Duke University (1981). Prior to Converse College, he taught at the University of Missouri and for three years with the University of Maryland's European program in Greece, Turkey, Spain and Germany.
