Local organizations are planning ceremonies to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Knights of Columbus Council No. 1111 will hold a ceremony at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Knights of Columbus hall at 318 S. Spanish St. in Cape Girardeau.
Council lecturer Paul Summers said the speaker will be Col. Donnie J. Holden. Summers said Holden has firsthand knowledge of the effects the attacks had because he was in New York City a couple days after they took place.
"He will be a voice of experience who was there," Summers said.
The John Guild Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution will hold an event at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Brookside Memorial Park in Jackson. Chapter regent Shirley Young will present Jackson Mayor Barbara Lohr with a flag commissioned by the Daughters of the American Revolution. Young said the flag, which was created to remember the attacks, "depicts the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and the Liberty Bell."
Young said the Liberty Bell represents United Airlines Flight 93, which crashed into a field Pennsylvania on the day of the attacks.
Rep. Donna Lichtenegger and Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder will be the speakers.
A reception will be held at the American Legion hall at 319 N. High St. in Jackson following the ceremony. Members of the Byrd Settlement Society Children of the American Revolution will distribute miniature 9/11 flags.
The SEMO District Fair will hold a remembrance ceremony at 3 p.m. Sunday. The event will take place at the grandstand and will feature speakers such as fire chief Rick Ennis and police chief Carl Kinnison.
Calvary United Pentecostal Church at 581 Broadridge Drive in Jackson will hold a commemorative service at 10:15 a.m. Sunday. Community leaders, members of the armed forces, veterans and emergency responders are invited to participate in the service. There will be a reception following the service.
