CAPE GIRARDEAU -- Missouri Industrial Equipment of Cape Girardeau is observing its 20th anniversary this year.
The forklift company, situated near the intersection of Highways 177 and 61, was founded in January 1971 by Don Owen of Cape Girardeau. It is the only franchised material-handling company locally owned and operated.
The firm became a Datsun-Nissan dealer in 1972. It also handles Mustang loaders, Continental engines and other allied lines.
When founded, the business was at 2729 Independence. It moved to its present site in 1980.
Through expansion its services now include industrial battery repair; engine machine work and rebuilding; hydraulic cylinder and pump repair; and total rebuilding of forklift trucks of any make, including diesel, electric, gasoline and propane.
Chris Owen, who joined the firm in 1972, is general manager.
"We feel we have one the most complete forklift service companies in the area," said Owen. "Our present facility, located on four acres, is designed for servicing and repairing material-handling equipment."
MIE services customers within a 100-mile radius of Cape Girardeau.
