As part of the annual 9/11 Day observance, the American Red Cross is encouraging eligible donors to give blood.

9/11 Day was established in 2002 as a day of service to honor victims and heroes of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States. Congress designated it a National Day of Service and Remembrance in 2009, according to a news release from the American Red Cross.

Several blood drives are planned in Southeast Missouri to allow people the opportunity to donate.

In Cape Girardeau, blood drives will be Sept. 7 at Cape West 14 Cine, Sept. 11 at the Cape Girardeau Career and Technology Center and Sept. 14 at Mount Auburn Christian Church.

In Jackson, there will be a drive Sept. 9 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Sept. 10 at Liberty Utilities and Sept. 11 at New McKendree United Methodist Church.

Two blood drives also are scheduled in Sikeston, Missouri, the first on Sept. 11 at Scott County Central High School and the second Sept. 14 at Missouri Delta Medical Center.

"This annual observance increasingly resonates with people with each passing year, for the benefit of countless people and communities in need, and that's surely gratifying," Jay S. Winuk, co-founder of 9/11 Day, said in the release. Winuk lost his brother, Glenn, a New York lawyer, in the Sept. 11 attacks.

In addition to the blood drives, other featured 9/11 Day projects include "Oh, Say Can You Sing," a nationwide student sing-along of "The Star-Spangled Banner" and the 9/11 Skills Service Day, in which professionals can donate skills to not-for-profit organizations. More information on those programs is available at 911day.org.
