People who want to move to Chaffee, Missouri, soon will have new options after the completion of an apartment complex there.
Although the complex hadn't been named, and it was unclear Tuesday when the units might be available for rent, construction began on the three buildings at Main Street and the railroad crossing Jan. 13.
They belong to Gill Family Properties, a development and property-management business based in Dexter, Missouri. The group secured the building permits for $150,000 each in October, according to city council meeting minutes. The $450,000 was the total cost it would take the company to build the apartments.
The three buildings consist of 12 units -- three town houses with four units in each -- an employee from Gill Family Properties said. The units will have two bedrooms, 1,200 square feet and 1 1/2 baths. Major appliances and trash pickup will be included.
City administrator Lee Horton welcomed the new housing to Chaffee and said it would be beneficial to the town.
"Oh, yeah, we welcome them for the tax benefits, and it's just good for the city," Horton said. "We don't have big apartments. We have a few little apartments and houses that people rent out, and they're always full. They know there's a market or they wouldn't be here."
The Gill group has properties in Poplar Bluff, Dexter, Sikeston, Jackson and Chaffee in Missouri and Paducah, Kentucky.
The Chaffee properties are at 101, 102 and 103 Burlington Lane. Horton said Gill Family Properties owns the lot and has room to expand.
"(The owners) feel that Chaffee is becoming known as a bedroom community for Cape Girardeau," Horton said. "It's close enough but still a quiet little town. And living expenses are fairly inexpensive."
