~Correction: Russell Lacewell of the Jackson area said he is not a member of the Socialist Workers Party. An article in Friday's Southeast Missourian concerning an anti-war rally may have left the impression that he is.
Lacewell's name and position as a social worker were listed in a sentence about four people who spoke. His name and position were followed by a semicolon, which was intended to offset him from the fourth person, who is a member of the Socialist Workers Party. However, the name of the fourth person was not listed. (RAN 2-24-91, PAGE 14A)
CAPE GIRARDEAU A group of Southeast Missouri State University students saying they support the troops in the Persian Gulf but are opposed to U.S. foreign policy drew about 20 supporters at a noon "anti-war" gathering Thursday.
A rally by the group Thursday night in the University Center at Southeast drew about 25 people.
The students, who call themselves the Southeast Anti-War Coalition, picketed the Federal Building in Cape Girardeau after a half-hour rally held on campus at noon. The president of the organization, Malcolm Jarrett, said the protest was part of a nationwide youth and student campaign for peace in the Middle East.
The rally Thursday evening featured several speakers. Speaking in opposition to the war were Father Patrick Wissman of the Newman Center, located on the Southeast campus; Karla Cooper, a Southeast student; Russell Lacewell, a Jackson area resident and social worker; and a representative of the Socialist Workers Party.
Jarrett said the organization, formed about four weeks ago, has about 15 members.
