Missouri Right to Life, which opposes abortion rights, has endorsed Republican Jason Crowell of Cape Girardeau in his bid for a seat in the Missouri General Assembly.

"We believe you are the candidate in the race with the best opportunity to serve in the legislature and reflect the views of Missouri Right to Life," said Dave Plemmons, the group's chairman.

The endorsement was based on responses to candidate surveys submitted to the group.

Crowell is one of three Republicans seeking the 158th District seat being vacated by state Rep. Mary Kasten, R-Cape Girardeau, who is retiring after 18 years. One Democrat is also running.

"The sanctity of life is one of the most important issues that will be considered in the Legislature," Crowell said. "I am proud to be pro-life and am honored to have the endorsement of Missouri Right to Life."

Stan Wicks of Cape Girardeau, one of Crowell's opponents in the Aug. 8 GOP primary, said he personally opposes abortion and feels alternatives to the practice should be promoted, but he opposes government intrusion into the lives of its citizens.

"The bottom line on abortion is I think people should be educated before they get pregnant," Wicks said. "Abortion should never be used for birth control."

The other Republican hopeful, Jay Purcell of Cape Girardeau, said he and his wife have three children, and he would be commited to family values.

Democrat Tom Neumeyer, who is unopposed in the primary, said he is "personally opposed to abortion."
