NEW MADRID, Mo. -- Facebook, that social networking site which has some 500 million active users, has added one more -- the New Madrid County Sheriff's Department.

The Sikeston Standard Democrat reported that New Madrid County Sheriff Terry Stevens, bowing to the popularity of the Internet and social networking especially with the younger generation, decided to add a Facebook page for his department. With the help of Deputy Chris Hensley, Stevens launched his department's Facebook page in August.

"Basically Facebook seemed like a viable tool to get information out about activities through another media on a daily basis," said Stevens. "This is simply an opportunity to be a little more accessible to the public."

The page features a photo of Stevens and his staff. Office manager Debbie Cowan monitors and updates the page, after sifting daily through the officers' reports.

Cowan explained she will post the more serious crimes and arrests made by the department, noting where the arrests are made and charges. Also she has begun listing those prisoners deputies transport to the penitentiary.

The public can add comments on the page's wall. Cowan noted the public's responses often are appreciation for the work by the deputies.

"Most people are impressed by it, and we are getting the information out in a timely fashion," Stevens said.

Already the page has more than 300 "friends" who have logged in as liking the site.

"I'm real media sensitive," said Stevens. He added while the site is easy for his staff to use, he intends for it to be used with restraint.

But, the sheriff continued, he does see it as another tool for law enforcement.

"In this electronic age, it is a quick and easy way for any law enforcement agency to reach the public," Stevens said.

Facebook users can find the site by searching for New Madrid County Sheriff's Department. Those who want to provide tips to the Sheriff's Department using the Internet can e-mail the department at nmcosd@yahoo.com or call the toll free number, 1-800-961-1595.
