CHESTERFIELD, Mo. -- A cat and a gerbil are recovering after fire broke out in a business next to the veterinary clinic where the animals were being held.

The fire was reported around 2:30 a.m. at St. Louis Cigar in Chesterfield, Missouri. Firefighters encountered heavy smoke before putting out the fire.

KMOV-TV reports that the cat and gerbil were in the veterinary clinic next door. Smoke got into the clinic but the animals were not badly hurt.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
