American Legion Post 158 of Jackson has selected three students as Music Student of the Month for September, October, and November. This is a program of the Americanism Committee of the Legion Post and recognizes outstanding music students of Jackson High School. This is funded by the American Legion Bingo Account. Each of the students will receive a $100 savings bond in honor of their accomplishments.
For the month of September, the music student of the month is Bobby Abernathy, son of Richard and Nora Abernathy of Jackson. Abernathy is a senior at JHS. He is a member of the Future Business Leaders of America; Hi-step; president of the Jackson High School Band; and plays in the Jackson Municipal Band. Abernathy also plays for special occasions at his church, St. Paul Lutheran Church. Following graduation, Abernathy plans to attend Southeast Missouri State University and later attend the University of Missouri and become a C.P.A. or C.M.A.For the month of October, the music student of the month is Julie Gerecke. Gerecke is a senior at JHS and is the daughter of Mike and Debbi Gerecke of Jackson. Gerecke is a member of the Symphonic and Marching Band and is an Indian Princess. She is also a member of the Chamber Choir, All-District Band; All-District Choir; and is co-captain of the JHS Spear-It Dancers. Gerecke is a member of the Future Business Leaders of America; French Club of which she is president; National Honor Society; Team Spirit; J-Club; and Hi-Step. Gerecke is a member of Immaculate Conception Church. Following graduation, she plans to attend either Truman State University, Westminster College or Maryville University and then go to law school.
November's music student of the month is Andrea Penland. Penland is also a JHS senior and is the daughter of Chuck and Joyce Penland of Jackson. She is a member of Chamber Choir; Choir Council; Handbell Choir; secretary of French Club; secretary of Peer Tutors; National Honor Society; Future Business Leaders of America; and the Pep Club. Penland is a member of the First Baptist Church of Jackson and its youth group, youth choir and is a cell group leader. Following graduation, Penland plans to attend Southwest Baptist University or William Jewell College, majoring in mathematics or science.
