The Cape Girardeau chapter of the American Cancer Society was named the unit of the year at the statwide division annual meeting.
The award is presented to the unit that exceeds in all program areas.
The Cape Girardeau unit surpassed all other counties in the following areas: income development year round programs, $130,000; patient services, 183 people served for a value of $23,963; public education, 18,052 people reached with programs of prevention and early detection of cancer for a value of $65,168; 1,247 health care professionals reached with programs for detection and treatment of cancert.
In addition, Cape Girardeau received the Unit of the Year award for patient services. Examples of the services include home medical equipment, wigs, information and guidance, medication assistance, transportation assistance, volunteer driver program, rehabilitation programs such as Reach to Recovery for breast cancer patients, We Can Weekend, support groups and visitor programs.
Cape Girardeau received the special event for excellence-gold award for it's Scape Odyssey Gala" held February 1992 and the silver award for public issues.
Kohlfeld Distributing Company received a special recognition award for support of American Cancer events. Nancy Mattingly, RN, received the silver award for leadership. She served as president this past year of the Cape Girardeau unit. Esther Kirby recieve a 25-year pin for volunteer efforts.
